COUNTERFEIT DVDs SEIZED

Ottawa - December 14, 2006 - More than 1,500 counterfeit movie DVDs were seized yesterday when a team led by the "A" Division RCMP Federal Investigations Unit searched two residences in Ottawa and Gatineau. One adult male was arrested. For more than three years, the suspect operated a web-based business through which he sold thousands of movie titles.

Every year, the illegal production and sale of DVDs and other counterfeit goods inflicts billions of dollars of financial loss on legitimate businesses, governments and taxpayers in Canada and around the world. During the holiday shopping season, it is important to remember that counterfeit goods are usually cheaply made, not guaranteed and not supported by customer service after the sale. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

The Canadian Motion Picture Distributors Association website, www.cmpda.org, offers information on detecting and avoiding counterfeit DVDs. If you suspect that a business is distributing counterfeit DVDs and wish to remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
