CALGARY MAN SENTENCED FOR ILLEGAL DISTRIBUTION OF COUNTERFEIT DVDs AND VIDEO GAMES

Background:
A search warrant was executed on May 3rd, 2006, at the residence of Darren MATHEWS in Calgary, Alberta, which resulted in the seizure of approximately one thousand illegal DVD's, multiple hard drives, printers, and related computer equipment, counterfeit X Box video games, software, illegal US satellite systems and cards.

On 2006-07-26, charges were laid in Calgary Provincial Court.  Sec. 42(1)(a) & (b) Copyright Act, Sec 10(1)(b) Radiocommunications Act, and Sec. 326(1) and Sec. 408(b) Criminal Code.

Update:
Darren Scott MATHEWS (B:1965-09-10) of Calgary, Alberta appeared in Calgary Provincial Court on Tuesday December 19, 2006 and entered a guilty plea to Section 42(1)(a) of the Copyright Act.  

Upon sentencing MATHEWS, the Judge issued a $1,000.00 fine.  He stated that the fine was reasonable due to his ordering the forfeiture of all the seized computer and satellite equipment valued at approximately $15,800.   Value of the seized counterfeit goods was approximately $30,000 to $50,000.
