OVER 750 COUNTERFEIT DVD’S SEIZED BY DURHAM POLICE
OSHAWA, Monday, March 5, 2007 – An Ajax couple is facing charges after officers seized over 750 counterfeit DVD’s at two convenience stores they own in Oshawa.
On Friday, March 2nd, 2007, Criminal Investigations Branch (CIB) was assisted by uniform officers from 17 Division (Oshawa) in executing a Criminal Code search warrant in the Oshawa area.
The search warrant was executed at the Oshawa Best Variety store, located on Wentworth Street West, where officers removed and seized DVD’s from several shelves behind the checkout counter.
Officers then attended a Nonquon Best Variety store, located on Nonquon Road in the north-end of Oshawa. Officers arrived on scene and were, initially, unable to locate any DVD’s. Investigation later revealed that the man had removed the DVD’s and placed them inside his car, prior to the officer’s arrival. The officers were directed to a car parked in a nearby lot. There they located and seized several boxes of DVD’s.
Investigators seized a total of 767 counterfeit DVD’s with a value in excess of $15,000 dollars. A check of the DVD’s revealed that they were all pirated. Investigation also revealed that seven of the movies for sale, were still playing in the theaters and another has not yet been released on DVD.
