MONTRÉAL, Thursday, March 8, 2007 – On Friday, March 2, investigators of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police Federal Investigation Section conducted a search in a Dollard-des-Ormeaux residence to put an end to a motion picture DVD counterfeiting and distribution operation.

A 45-year-old woman faces charges under section 42 of the Copyright Act, which provides for fines of up to 1 million dollars and imprisonment for up to five years.

700 Counterfeit Movies
As a result of this search, the RCMP Intellectual Property Rights Unit investigators seized more than 700 copies of movies on DVD. The suspect used mainly the Internet to distribute the counterfeit movies. The investigation is ongoing to determine the scope of the distribution operation and to gather further evidence.
